Eating Chocolate Like Taking the Slow Road

I embarked on yet another road trip down to Southern California, this time, to acquire retail partners for Jade Chocolates.  Instead of taking the straight and narrow of highway 5, I decided to take the slower, longer road on 101.  It’s a scenic drive.  I was awestruck with the beauty of the California landscape. I’m actually warming up to road trips, even with my recent car failures.

Driving up 101 from Southern California is a humbling experience.  The vast ocean of the deep blue waters and the quintessential rolling hills carpeted with blond grass and landscaped with the out reaching arms of mighty oak trees are scenes in my head that I will never forget.  At last, I’ve learned to appreciate a long drive.

It’s a learning experience, just like eating chocolate.  For years, I took for granted what chocolate had to offer until finally, I just got it.  Jade Chocolate’s Dragon’s Breath bar is chocolate that people who like taking the slow road will love.  If you eat it too fast or without care, you’ve just eaten a piece of chocolate.  But you took time to listen, feel and taste, then you’ll discover all the nuances in Dragon’s Breath.  In your initial bite, you taste chocolate mixed with the crunch of roasted sesame seeds invading your palate, but quickly turns into smokey, almost bacony taste.  Then when there is no more chocolate to chew, you begin to feel a slight and gentle heat on the back and sides of your throat followed again by the smokiness of the lapsang souchang tea.   All this with just a single piece of chocolate.

Back to my road trip….From Southern California, I hit cities such as Orange, Los Angeles, Venice, Studio City, Manhattan Beach, Pacific Palisades, Santa Barbara, Santa Ynez, Paso Robles, and Templeton. We immediately acquired accounts with a few retail stores, so the trip was well worth it.  Here are some of our new retail partners:

Chocolate Maya in Santa Barbara.  This is a quaint chocolate shop run by a woman aptly named Maya.  She also conducts chocolate travels to cacao plantations.  Her first trip was to Chuao, Venezuela earlier this year in February. Here are photos of her shop.  This was my first time in Santa Barbara. The people in the town were warm and kind-hearted.  I’ll have to make another trip here soon.

Chefmakers Cooking Academy in Pacific Palisades. This is a great shop for hard to find kitchen gadgets, books, cutlery, and gourmet foods.  It also provides cooking classes for adults and children.

Big Sugar Bakeshop in Studio City.  If you happen to be walking down the street and peer into this bakeshop, there is no way that the irresistible interiors won’t draw you in.  It was hard for me to walk out empty handed, but I had to hit the road for more accounts. Next time, I’m getting their homemade ice cream cookie. *our chocolates won’t be available until early October 2008.

EOS Estate Winery in Paso Robles.  You’ll be blown away with the 5,000 square foot marketplace.  They also have self guided estate tours for you to enjoy at a leisurely pace. Wine and Jade Chocolates pair extremely well, more on a later post!

And lastly, Coco Noche in Manhattan Beach.  They’re only open at night, keeping in tune with it’s name and serves up a full menu of Asian fare for dinner.  This innovative wine bar, also has a wine pairing menu which matches ice creams/gelatos and chocolates.  Three of our tasting tiles are paired with Natalie’s pick of three wines.  It’s a great concept, I really wonder why this isn’t being done is more places.

Edible Treasures at Kabuki Springs and Spa

Imagine a place of solitude tucked away in the heart of a bustling city.  A little gem that once upon entering it’s doors, you are transformed into a world of harmony, relaxation, and serenity.  Your surroundings are modern with strong touches of Japanese antiquities.  You’ve entered Kabuki Springs.  You’ve come to bathe in the communal baths or perhaps for an abhyanga massage.  Your body is regenerated and just when you’re ready to step out back into the fast paced street, you are handed a tiny foiled wrapped gift. As you unwrap it, you smile.  It’s chocolate.

Jade Chocolates is proud to be a part of San Francisco’s Kabuki Springs and Spa.

Kabuki is the first retailer to have our mini version of our line of chocolate bars, our tasting tiles.  Unlike most other spas, Kabuki Springs is a modern day Japanese communal spa.  Some days are strictly for women, others for men and clothing optional!  There is one day a week, where a bathing suit is required, when both men and women share the communal bath.  I haven’t had the pleasure of a massage just yet, or of using the communal bath, but I sure am intrigued!

Leland Tea and Jade Chocolates Pairings

The regulars at Leland Tea Company, located at the corner of Polk and Bush Streets in San Francisco, have confirmed my suspicions.  Drinking a soothing cup of tea with chocolate is a definite must.  Here are some of Will Otero’s, the owner of Leland Tea, top picks of Leland Tea and Jade Chocolate pairings:

  1. DRAGON’S BREATH paired with 1. LAPSANG SOUCHANG (black tea smoked over pinewood).  2. RUSSIAN COUNTRY (a blending of four teas-assam, ceylon, darjeeling, china black, and a touch of lapsang souchang) 3. GILDA’S SECRET GARDEN (white tea blended with bergamot and lavender blossoms). 4. RHUMBA ROOIBOS CHAI (red tea with cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, and anise)
  2. GENMAI paired paired with 1. BOGART (black tea accented with cinnamon and buttery hazelnuts) 2. JASMINE FANCY ( green tea scented with jasmine flowers) 3. GEIKO GREEN (green tea with ginseng, lemongrass and popped brown rice)
  3. ORIENT ESPRESSO paired with 1. LAPSANG SOUCHANG/BOGART BLEND. That’s right, when you go to Leland Tea, you can expect to mix teas to create your own special blend.

If you don’t know about this tea company, stop by.  You can take a sniff of the tea offerings at the tea bar before you purchase a pot.

North Bay or Bust

I learned early on that in a small business, marketing takes the great majority of time.  The number of retail shops carrying Jade Chocolates is increasing every week, and it was time that I hit the unchartered territory in the San Francisco Bay Area–the North Bay.  I’ve pretty much lived in San Francisco all my life, living just 8 minutes away from the Golden Gate Bridge.  When we have visitors, we’d drive over, stop at the first exit to snap photos of the bridge with the city as the backdrop, then head straight on back over the bridge.  Other than some awesome hiking trails and  Napa valley wineries, there hasn’t been any other reason to travel any farther north than that, until now.

Researching potential stores, I’ve come across many unknown cities which I don’t recognize.  Ross and Kentfield? Must be in the North Bay.   My reluctance to drive into the suburban countryside soon waned as more and more potential stores kept popping up in my online quest for Jade Chocolate retailers.  Danna and I hopped into the car, and set off for Mill Valley, Tiburon, Petaluma, and Santa Rosa. One store in particular located in a tiny town of Graton was the whole reasoning for the day long trip.  Graton is home to about 2,000 residents which have the luxury of claiming the Far West Trading Company as it’s own.  Don’t sneeze when driving through the town, you just might pass up one of the most treasured stores I’ve encountered. The store houses exquisite Asian furnishings from hand craved jewelry boxes to large armoires, a loose leaf tea bar, tea accessories and chocolate. Sip on perfectly steeped tea amidst museum quality furishings. A feast for your eyes and senses.

We met Gary, one of the proprietors of the shop.  He tasted a sampling of our chocolate bars, including our newest bar, the Orient Espresso.  We tried a pot of green tea.  Very grassy and fresh.  I don’t remember the name, but it was a tea quite like no other I’ve tried.  If you’re on your way to Santa Rosa, Sebastopol or Bodega Bay, stop by at Far West and pair one of Jade Chocolate’s bar with a tea from their TeaBar.

The trip conquering the North Bay lasted the entire day.  We clocked in a good 150 miles on the odometer. I’ll definately drive over the bridge soon and hopefully I’ll discover more great finds.

Any orders below $30 will cost a mere $5.  What could be better?  Don’t live or work in the city?  Then get creative and send it to your neighbor’s best friend who lives in the Castro.  Or send it to  your cousin’s girlfriend who works in the Ferry Building.  Just be sure that they save you some chocolate.

Puerto Rican Night at Leland Tea Co.

tea-bar.jpgThe Leland Tea Co. is such a jeweled find in the outskirts of San Francisco’s Nob Hill/Tenderloin area.  It’s open spacious, homey, and clean atmosphere lures you in from the busy street. But don’t expect to get a simple pot of tea.  Will and his crew create amazing blends using dried flowers, fruits, spices and of course tea. They’re also nortorious for blending tea with other teas, who would have thought a black tea and a green tea would taste like a creamsicle (orange dream).  Lots of the ingredients are organic and fair trade. You can’t beat that.

Will Otero, the owner of Leland Tea, is just as great as the tea blends he creates.  Stop in and you’ll most likely see him chatting with whomever may be at the counter, with his boisterous laugh permeating the entire tea shop.   There is a loose leaf tea bar where customers are encouraged to open the cans and take a sniff of his unique blended teas.  One of the coolest things (and you can tell he loves doing this) is when he ecourages people to take two canisters, open them up and smell them together. Anyone can tell he loves watching people be creative, and making that creativity a reality in a tea pot.  Clever! Oh, you’re clever Will, you really are.   You inspire me, to get more inventive with chocolate.

He’s also got a tea blend called ‘Kisses’ which has chocolate nibs, Chinese black tea, and organic rosebuds.

blog-leland-band-2.jpgThe week I meet Will, he invited me to come to Puerto Rican night with all you can eat Puerto Rican food, a live band and dancing.   Proceeds from the event I attended, benefited a non-profit organization for At Risk Seniors. I decided to showup with a few dozen Jade Chocolates prototype truffles, all made with Leland Tea.    The band played some great Latin jazz, and to my surprise, they were all in high school!  I was blown away. ‘Hijo de la Musica Latina isn’t any ordinary high school level band.

I passed out samples of Grey’s Kelly, Mumbai Chai, Pepperminty Chamomile, and Peaches.  Grey’s Kelly, was the clear favorite, an infusion of organic lavender and organic earl grey tea in 41% cacao. Peaches, a blending of Ceylon Orange Pekoe, black tea, peach blossoms, dried pieces of peaches and ginger was also popular. My personal favorite was the Mumbai Chai, which has definite cardamom notes and lesser clove notes. (side note:  Cardamom  satisfies every bit of my soul, if there was a perfume scented with cardamom, I’d buy it!).

Pictured above are the Leland Tea Dancers.  The guy in the khaki shorts is Will,  enjoying the night as much as his patrons.  Stop by his shop and hopefully you’ll be just as fascinated about Leland Teas as I am. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into when I made an appointment to see Will at his tea shop, Just sell my chocolate bars at his shop?  Nooo.  Perhaps a collaboration of Jade Chocolates and Leland Tea Truffles are on the chopping board.  Stay tuned.
